Ok I think I have finally finished up with everything. I didn’t realize until now all of my youtube videos that I embedded broke, but I think I went back and fixed all of them. At first  I was having trouble backing up my information because I wasn’t using cast iron coding, instead I was using Fat Cow. Eventually after talking with Professor Groom and some of the people from Fat Cow I figured out how to back up the information even though I wasn’t able to back it up fully due to the limitations with Fat Cow. I would not go with Fat Cow again if I had the choice, but it was certainly a learning experience. Otherwise last Thursday’s class helped me figure out everything else I needed to know about how to put my blog onto UMW Blogs at  I am sad to see this class come to an end, but alas all great things come to an end.

December 7th, 2010

I want to start off by saying this was an awesome class and I had tons of fun doing most of the projects. I also want to say that despite  the fact you did warn us in the beginning of class that this class was not going to be for people to sit idly by, but one where people were required to actively participate. I don’t think it prepared me for how time intensive it was actually going to be.

Now for a break down of the assignments:

For the 2 readings  I read them both and I found them both confusing and sort of boring, but I understand what the importance of them was. I think it was probably a good idea to start with that just to give a little bit of background information.

For the movie in 5 pictures I think I did a pretty good job highlighting the major parts of Toy Story 3 to make as coherent of a story from 5 pictures as possible, which is surprisingly difficult because you can’t pick the exact pictures you want you have to deal with the ones you can find. Also I really enjoyed the  3 picture stories that we did in class because  we weren’t as restricted to what pictures we could use.

I absolutely adored doing the the Daily Shoot assignments and I think I will try and start doing them again over break! I thought this assignment combined the creative challenge and the fun that  makes for a really great assignment, and I would be extremely disappointed to find out that the next class doesn’t get to do this.  I took this assignment very seriously, I would check to see what the assignment was in the morning everyday and then wherever I went I was trying to find  something that fit the assignment. I think this assignment helped me to see the world in terms of what would make a good picture. Rather then thinking what a pretty sunset I would think, wow if I take a picture of the sunset from this angle it would turn out really powerful, or something like that. I think it was good to have people pick their favorites at the end because it is always nice to get recognized for your hard work.

I also enjoyed the story with only sounds, because sometimes people forget how much of  the feel of a movie depends on the sound effects in the background because that is what sets the scene a lot of time. I think this is a really good way for people to get introduced to audio. I think this assignment could also be done individually unlike a couple of the other group assignments.

For the uninteresting stories, while I had a hard time finding a microphone that worked, and I spent a couple hours trying to pick out the perfect sounds, recording my voice so it could be heard and not silence or screeching (even though it still is  a little rough it is a lot better then some of my other tries), and rearranging/cutting things so the timing was right. I really enjoyed both doing this assignment and listening to the other people do theirs.

Okay now comes the video commentary. I spent seemingly forever on this assignment first cutting the movie down took forever, I now know like ever word to Daddy Daycare because I watched it through so many times. Also, let me mention how I hate how my voice sounds recorded and I don’t do so well  thinking and talking on the fly. I recorded it and re-recorded it over 15  times until it was into the wee hours of the morning, and then eventually I got to the point where I didn’t really care anymore, I had gotten the audio to the point where I wasn’t absolutely embarrassed by it  so I decided I would just be done with it. But then  it took me who know’s how long to convert it to something  that was usable. Needless to say I was extremely frustrated. Despite my great frustrations I think this was a good assignment it just wasn’t my cup of tea, I would however give more time for people to work on this assignment if you do this in the future.

I thought the mash ups were such a good idea! I liked how the first part of the assignment was to find examples of mash ups that have been done by other people because I think that helped me get some ideas. I had a lot of ideas of what to do for this project, the challenging part was making my ideas actually happen, I had a hard time figuring out where to start. In the end I was happy with how mine turned out, I just wish I had more time and better tools to make one I was happier with. I was amazed at how some of the other peoples’ turned out, especially the Shutter Island/Harry Potter one and I am not sure how she was able to make it so good in the time period we we were given.

Now I can honestly say I didn’t enjoy the street view assignment at all and if I could chose one thing to get rid of it would be this one!!!!  Part of my issues with this one was how my internet was working and part of it was simply I was bored and I hated recording my voice over and over and over again. I am pretty sure my roommate was close to kicking me out of the room because of this assignment and how annoying I was being with it.  However, I kept chugging along until I was tired enough to think what I did was good. Plus I am not  sure how much information about myself I want to be on the web, I recognize the amazing things that can happen when you share information on the web, but I am extremely hesitant about what type of information I am willing to put on the web because everything I do can be traced back to me, so I didn’t really want to provide a map to help people.

For both of the Fan Fiction assignments, I throughly enjoyed myself and I think I did a really good job on them, because I was able to share something that I love that I don’t get to talk about on a regular basis, it made me extremely happy to go back to something I feel comfortable with  even if I am doing something I have never done before with it.

I would say that I put in a lot of effort into this class, I didn’t devot my  whole life to it, but overall I did my best to create creative well thought out posts, I am not a naturally creative person therefore it was constantly pushing me to the limits, which is something I am grateful for. However I felt  sometimes overwhelmed by the assignments from both this class and my other classes, and my assignments were late quite a few times and once or twice I missed  one of my project posts. For my overall project I think my pictures really did improve from the beginning of the semester, and I look forward to using the things I learned in the future.

I tried to comment on others blogs on a pretty regular basis, however I didn’t keep up with it as well as others did. A lot of times I looked at others blogs, and I enjoyed what I saw, but I didn’t know what exactly what I should say.

Honestly, I would take this class all over again troubles and all because I enjoyed how the class grew and developed, and is different from  a lot of  my other from the book classes. I feel like I learned a lot!

Colors Galore

November 30th, 2010

The first picture is where I was trying to use the horizontal lines as not  portray “rest” which is something that usually goes along with horizontal lines. I think by having the horizontal pictures formated in a vertical position, it exaggerates the massive amounts of books and I think when it comes to massive amounts of book it gives the sense of a lot of reading, and being extremely busy. I picked to use the stack of AP books we have in my house because of the amount of stress that is associated with the test.

For the second picture I took a picture of a medallion necklace as I was wearing it. I put it on the macro setting so to focus on the details of the medallion. I also like the contrast of the gold color with the purple.

I just loved this picture of flowers with all of the different colors, textures, and the  depth. I took a couple pictures of this vase of flowers but this one while not perfect was my favorite.

I liked this distinctive red, featured with a pretty netrual backround, and I tookit from this angle because I was hoping it would add some depth.  I thought this picture came out looking very pretty.

WANTED: Obernewtyn Fan Fiction

November 23rd, 2010

I know that this post is focused on something that most people know absolutely nothing about, but I just can’t help but to share what I love. I think taking fan fiction to the next level is a really interesting thing that I definitly will search fo in the future. So now to my post.

In the Obernewtn  Chronicles (in the beginning of the series) in this world there are two major governing groups 1. The Council- which is corrupt government agency which condemns misfits (those with special abilities) and those who seek too much knowledge and power and 2. the  Herder Faction- a corrupted religious organization (just to be clear  the author makes it clear she isn’t criticizing religion, just that this one has lost sight of what is right and wrong) they also condemn misfits and they also have more power with the people because they use peoples beliefs and fears to control them. As my Fan Fiction I  created three Wanted Posters that I think either the Council or the Herder Faction would put up.

The first person is the druid and he was a former Herder, but he was unable to justify the destuction of books. So he creates a community in the highland of people where they still contain the hatred of  misfts, however they do not abide by the laws of the council. This community and the Obernewtyn community ( a secret haven for misfits) have dealt with each other a lot in their travels, and they continue to play an important role throughout the books.

The second  picture is that  of an infamous slave trader, called Salamander, he has taken the one major character Matthew and the Druid’s community and has taken them to the Red Land which is where Elspeth’s(protagonist) quest will lead.

She is gypsy that Elspeth and others saved at the beginning of the Ashling, fom being burned by the herder’s, she has ties to the Pure-Blood Gypsies, which allowed her to be introduced to the gypsy Swallow, who is imortant for Elspeth’s quest.

Crystal Clear!

November 23rd, 2010

I have decided  that I am just going to  take pictures with various themes. I thought it would be interesting to mess with glass and the different ways light  can be utilized and the clarity of the glass.

For the first two it is less about the light and more about the framing provided by the glass. I think the first one works pretty well in framing the house because of the decorative nature of the glass. The second picture uses the glass as a neutral counterpoint for the   autumn leaves.

Here is a few pictures of the same antique lamp, but all from different angles, to kind of figure out what angle is best, and  basically just to play with the light.

My Favorite Though has to be this picture of my necklace, I really like the way the tree is illuminated the tree:

The Obernewtyn Chronicles

November 20th, 2010

I was unaware that we were supposed to have this posted before this class, I just got into the routine of having the assignments be due on Tuesday. Even though I become obsessed with many things including tv shows, movies, and books only a few of them haven’t faded. While my obsession with Harry Potter is constant, I dare say it it is not my absolute favorite.  When I need a familiar book, Harry Potter is not my first choice,  instead I go to my book series called the Obernewtyn Chronicles. Something you have to know is only the first three books were published in the United States however at the time I was  unaware that the rest of the books out are sold only in Australia (but they just started releasing the other books in the USA now on the internet), and so I paid I small fortune to buy the books from Australia, and honestly, I don’t regret it at all. I am not going to go into detail because I am hoping someone will read them, and if I try and describe the book it will not sound as amazing as it actually is! However it is a fantasy series that deals with the world after a sort of apocalypse referred to as the great white, and the struggles of a specific group of misfits to be accepted. This book has everything, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book. All of the characters in the book are so well developed, and have very distinctive personalities. If you like fantasy books I would highly recommend this book series!!!  Here is the major fan page which I am a member of:

Pictures with a Purpose:Evil

November 18th, 2010

Despite the wonderful things that images can do, in today’s society people use images to distort people’s perception, a ploy which unfortunately many companies utilize. A lot of times photos are used in such ways that are ethically questionable in regards to whether or not they are too deceptive or whether they invade people’s privacy.

Personally for me the image of the first burrito makes me super hungry one minute, and the second one makes me lose my appetite the next. Personally I think it is extremely deceptive to advertise one thing one instant when in reality what is being sold is just a ghost of what the advertised good is. I know this has happened to me, and I am sure it has happened to everyone else at least once in their lives. There was this one Christmas I asked for the Amazing Amy doll (which is weird because I was never a big doll person) which looked super cool in the commercial she seemed so nice when she was talking in the commercial, but after getting her for Christmas I was very upset when she would demand in a very nasty tone that “I  feed her NOW… PLEASE”. Such disappoints are what makes it such a big deal that Dominos is asking people to send in their own images of their pizza in order to portray their pizza as the real deal, and regain some of the trust that many businesses have lost due to their deception. I am sure Dominos is selective of what images it chooses to portray, but the idea that images have so much power, and that the companies are now starting to admit that advertisements they were using are deceiving is a pretty amazing thing!

Movie Stars are the perfect example of an “invasion of privacy”, I am not one to  feel too bad for the  rich and famous, but people deserve to be able to walk to the grocery story with baggy sweatpants and no make-up on without showing up in the magazines and the web with a nasty caption underneath. While their profession does make them the center of the public’s eye, it doesn’t mean people should take pictures of them at their low points, because they are human too! Would you want your picture of you on a bad day broad casted all over the whole campus let a lone the whole world.

Another thought is like what we were talking about in class the other day, about all the different things that google maps catches on “film”, should everything that google takes a picture of be shown to the whole world. I am not sure, I am not saying that I think it shouldn’t be shown, but I don’t know that I think it should, just it isn’t a black and white situation any more. There are a lot more  opportunities to exist in a gray world where ethics in regards to involvement/privacy are blurred.  I would love to hear different opinions on the matter!

Google Map of Dear Ol’ Pennsylvania

Here is my google map video it took me long and hard to get this published there were other places I would have liked to shown, but the length of the video then would have been too long.

I hope you enjoy!

Pictures with a Purpose: Good

November 16th, 2010

I am doing something a  little different for this post, I was thinking about it and I think it is a very important thing to step back, and think about why the pictures are being taken. Pictures and images play a major role in today’s society and pictures are used a lot of times to make people aware of different events and circumstances. Which is something very important especially since we have the means to share it with literally millions of people.Photos can give a glimpse into the past, to a different time, a lot of times simply telling a story about the past can lead to a disconnection, but by seeing the picture you can get a feel for what life was like back then.  Capturing a moment is something that should never be overlooked it is a precious thing. Note the pictures you are about to see are not done by me, and I am no way taking credit for them.

This first picture is a very important because this simple  pink bow being held by these hands, represents something way bigger than itself, it is a recognizable image that represents breast cancer and the hope for a cure! Images help when it comes to helping to make any item recognizable this isn’t limited to good causes it includes other things including brands such as the NIKE check mark.

See these two lovely ladies for me at least it is clear to me what time period this image is from (the 20s) and it encompasses the leisure and the wealth of this time period.

Capturing a moment is to me the most important thing to me. I know that I have some pictures of me and my friends that when I see them I recall the entire situation, and all the wonderful memories it has. This image makes me laugh because a bird stealing money from a purse when you are right there is something that would be hard to believe if you didn’t see it with your own eyes. (I just want to say I wonder why this photographer didn’t point out to her that her money was about to be stolen by a bird)

He Kissed a Mermaid and He Liked it

November 9th, 2010

I have been having a really hard time with this assignment. I am not sure if this is exactly what is being looked for, but I think this is a step in the right direction. I was having a lot of trouble executing this assignment, I think this would be a really fun thing to mess around with if I had better tools to work with, and more time to experiment.
